Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader in AI-integrated Biomedical Devices

Posting Date: October 22, 2026
Application Deadline: December 4, 2026

The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science seeks to recruit a world-class junior faculty member for a Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader position in AI-integrated Biomedical Sensors, Diagnostics, and/or Medical Imaging. If awarded, this is a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2027. This position is for candidates working in alignment with the Federal Strategic Priority of “health and biotechnology.”

The Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program is a $120 million investment to help institutions bring more internationally based early career researchers (ECR) to Canada. This program is administered by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS). The Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader position is associated with an Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair and is valued at $100,000 per year over six years. A possible extension is available for six additional years at the same yearly amount and will be contingent on confirming that the recruited ECR has progressed in their academic career and demonstrates the research conducted since the recruitment has been transformational, translational and has garnered partners.

Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders awards are intended for exceptional early career researchers (ECR). Candidates must be within five years (minus eligible delays) of the start date of their first research-related appointment, defined as an appointment where the individual has the autonomy to conduct research independently. All eligible delays in research (e.g., maternity, parental, medical, bereavement) are credited as twice the amount of time taken. Professional leaves (e.g., training, sabbatical, administrative) are not credited as eligible leaves. Only candidates who are internationally based (both working and residing outside of Canada) as of July 28, 2026, are eligible. Applicants must state in their cover letter that they meet the criteria for an ECR and that they were based outside of Canada as of July 28, 2026.

The ideal applicant will have a strong foundation in next-generation devices or imaging methods that take advantage of recent advances in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. This faculty member will join a vibrant, growing community of biomedical engineering researchers at the University of Victoria. This role offers the opportunity to move beyond traditional design and directly integrate cutting-edge artificial intelligence algorithms into complex real-world medical practice.

The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate deep expertise in one or more areas related to next-generation devices and approaches, with the expressed goal of improving patient outcomes at scale, improving equity of access to healthcare, and delivering cost savings to the public. Possible application areas include, but are not limited to the following:

  • AI-based sensors and wearable devices for remote, secure, and respectful monitoring of patient data and health in Indigenous and other underserved communities.
  • AI- and ML-based methods for image processing and medical imaging via X-ray, MRI, ultrasound, spectroscopy, or other modalities.
  • be appointed to the Department of Mechanical Engineering and/or Electrical and Computer Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor;
  • contribute to the design and delivery of course-based curricula for the Biomedical Engineering students at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and
  • interact with other relevant members of the scholarly community at UVic, within and outside the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.
  • hold (or be on the verge of completing) a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or a relevant engineering discipline;
  • be a registered professional engineer in Canada, or be eligible to apply for registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (details available at www.egbc.ca);
  • have clear ideas and aspirations to contribute to the Biomedical Engineering Program’s drive to increase the diversity of our student population and foster a supportive and inclusive environment for all;
  • possess excellent communication skills with an ability to communicate research vision, methods, rationale and impacts across a diverse array of audiences; and
  • demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate engineering education as evidenced by:
    • potential for excellence in teaching courses related to the Biomedical Engineering discipline, and,
    • an inclusive approach to mentoring and supervising diverse students both in classroom and in research environments.

Please note that the requirement for the candidate to hold or be near completion of a Ph.D. is a requirement of the University of Victoria and not the Impact+ Program.

The candidate’s qualifications, experience, overall market demand and rank will determine a final salary offer. Industry experience is an asset. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $120,000 – $150,000. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.

Candidates should submit a single PDF document that includes:

  1. a cover letter providing an overview of the candidate’s qualifications and how their research experience would complement the position as described; the cover letter must also state that the applicant meets the criteria for an ECR (i.e. they are within five years of their first research-related appointment, minus eligible delays) and that they were working and residing outside of Canada as of July 28, 2026.
  2. a detailed curriculum vitae;
  3. a max 2-page description of the candidate’s proposed research program;
  4. a max 1-page description of the candidate’s teaching experience and philosophy;
  5. a max 1-page statement on how a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion would be embodied in the teaching and research activities. In forming their EDI statement, applicants are asked to refer to the Equity Action Plan, particularly its 5 universal goals, and elaborate on how they would build and lead a diverse research team that champions inclusivity, ensures that all members have the opportunity to reach their full potential and works to create opportunities for meaningful collaborations across the UVic campus.
  6. contact information for four referees.

To be considered, please submit your application package via email to eceasst@uvic.ca with the subject line “AI-Integrated Devices: Asst Prof. position” by December 4, 2026. Applications should be addressed to: Dr. John White.

The University acknowledges that career interruptions and slowdowns may affect a candidate’s record of research achievement and, when applicable, encourages applicants to describe these impacts in their application. Life circumstances such as illness, disability, family and community responsibilities (including parental leave, caregiving responsibilities, illness-related leave, chronic illness or disability, and COVID-19-related disruptions) are a normal part of life and may influence a nominee’s research record. These circumstances will be carefully considered during the assessment process. Applications are encouraged from individuals who have experienced career interruptions for parental or other types of leaves (see https://www.canada.ca/en/research-coordinating-committee/priorities/support-early-career-researchers.html for information on how career interruptions affect Early Career Researcher eligibility).

To safeguard research in academia, the Government of Canada has implemented the Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC) and the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships (NSGRP). These Research Security policies apply to the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program. UVic recommends applicants to review these policies to ensure alignment with Research Security considerations of research funding programs. Vetting of shortlisted candidates will be integrated into the adjudication process for this competition. When awarded the Emerging Leader position, the successful applicant must not have any active affiliation with any entity on Canada’s List of Named Research Organizations (NRO) of concern and must maintain this status throughout their tenure as Emerging Leader.

Please note that reference and background checks, including credential and degree verification, may be undertaken as part of this recruitment process. Faculty and Librarians at the University of Victoria are governed by the provisions of the Collective Agreement. Members are represented by the University of Victoria Faculty Association.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. If you are neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident, please indicate if you are authorized to work in Canada or your willingness to apply for authorization if offered a position, contingent upon eligibility and approval from Canadian government authorities.
